Evacuation Zones in Tampa
Tampa Evacuation Zones: A Guide
Tampa is highly susceptible to hurricanes and storm. In the surety of residents, official authority designed a special evacuation zone which are categories in A, B, C, D, and E. These zones categorized high to low risk.
The city has established evacuation zones based on the vulnerability to storm surges and flooding, and Adams warned that residents in those areas leave if told to do so.
The zones go from A to E, which helps local authorities carefully with evacuations during emergencies.
Zone A: Highest Risk
Zone A covers the land mass closest to the coast and waterways, including Tampa Bay and Hillsborough Bay.
This area is the most vulnerable to hurricane surges, even under a Category One storm.
The lowest-lying area, Zone A, receives the first mandatory evacuation orders because of that likelihood.
The area has been hit and flooded during tropical storms and hurricanes.
Zone B: Moderate Risk
Zone B is located just a bit further inland and also remains at high risk from Category 2 storms or higher.
It is slightly less dangerous than Zone A, but residents of B areas remain at risk for storms and need to be prepared to evacuate if ordered, especially during more robust weather.
Zones C, D, and E: Lower Risk
Where zones C, D, and E are further inland and less likely to be threatened by storm surges.
That would require a Category 3 hurricane or stronger in most cases. Since they might not get a lot of undersea flooding like the 1% — 100 year and + flood elevation areas, these areas can be just as problematic during solid weather events; with high winds, power outages and potentially damage to infrastructure.
Knowing Your Zone
Using Tampa’s online lookup tool, residents may quickly determine their evacuation zone by entering an address.
Residents should be aware and prepared to evacuate if a storm is imminent.
During hurricane season, this simple information can make the difference in evacuating well ahead of a storm and having an emergency plan.
