The sentencing trial in the Texas school massacre, one of this nation’s worst-ever campus shootings. SANTA FE, Texas (KXAN) – The morning of May 18, tragedy unfolded in Sante Fe High School. Seventeen-year-old student Dimitrios Pagourtzis killed 10 and wounded another 13 after opening fire on his fellow classmates. The shooting killed 10 people – eight students and two teachers – who were sending shockwaves through not only this small community but the United States.
One was a shotgun and the other was a. 38 caliber revolver which had belonged to his father The shooter opened fire around 7:30 a.m., roughly 30 minutes before surrendering to law enforcement, the Times-Dispatch reported. Investigators allege not only did he then go to the school, but that his intent was “suicide by cop” if cornered.
He was arrested and charged with capital murder, as well as aggravated assault on a public servant for the shooting. He was 18, old enough to be spared the death penalty – but a conviction meant life without chance of parole.
Legal Proceedings
This litigation has been going on for years. Pagourtzis’ mental health has been a major issue in the case, resulting it numerous expert evaluations and hearings on his competence to stand trial. He was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia and serious mental health issues in the years following massacre.
In June, a judge ordered Pagourtzis to undergo an evaluation in prison hospitalization after questioning his competency. A death penalty expert said his mental health evaluations declared him incompetent to stand trial then. His care was taken on by North Texas State Hospital. His care was reviewed at intervals until they were able to demonstrate that the wound has been without evidence or symptom and improving, as gauge by routine evaluations.
Current Update
Dimitrios Pagourtzis – A trial to determine his sanity has not yet been set as of mid-2024, with a competency hearing in June 2024 concluding he was still unfit to aid in assisting his defense. Adderley’s treating psychiatrists testified that while he has improved, his schizophrenia – with delusions and cognitive impairments strong symptoms of the illness.
The case has been overseen by Judge John Ellisor, who said last month that it was important to get Pagourtzis into a facility where he could receive care. The court then ruled another phase of psychiatric hospitalisation should be scheduled until his return in December 2024. The delays in the trials have frustrated families of victims as well as an edgy community waiting for closure, waiting for justice. Concerns were raised early on that the case has taken so long to get to trial.
