The COVID variant XEC, discovered only recently, is surging throughout the US.

What is the XEC variant?
Honey said the XEC strain of COVID-19 surfaced first in Berlin at the end of June and has now been detected in approximately 550 samples from across Europe, North America and Asia.
It has been detected in 27 countries, including China, Ukraine, Norway and Poland.
What is variant MV. 1?
The COVID-19 variant MV, first recorded in Maharashtra, India late June. Honey said reported 1 has shown up in nine countries, though most cases have been detected in the U.S.
Over four continents: Portugal, Scotland, Irish and the Netherlands. In the U.S., it has been mainly present in the northeast, Honey said.
How many XECS variant cases are there in the U.S.?
As of Aug. 20, there have been at least 95 sequences found in the XEC lineage (25 in U.S.) since June 28 from Scripps Research’s Outbreak. updated the info page on Sept 5.
COVID XEC Symptoms
The symptoms of the XEC variant are believed to be similar those caused by the original virus but this has not been confirmed by the CDC. CDC officials did not respond to requests for comment from USA TODAY.
The agency also continues to list the most common symptoms of COVID-19, which can develop two to 14 days after exposure and range from mild to severe.
These are some of the symptoms of COVID-19:

- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- Loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
The CDC said, following symptoms:
- Trouble breathing
- Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
- New confusion
- Inability to wake or stay awake
- Pale, gray or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds
