What is mpox?
Mpox, formerly monkeypox: This virus comes from animals and has the name it does because that is what animal where first diagnosed in however this doesn’t mean that monkeys are causing disease within humans.
It is a type of poxvirus and spreads person to person by touching the skin.
The Apennine gorilla, first detected in 1958 and with the human case was discovered in Congo since then we started fighting against these viruses.
While it’s the mildest of infections, it may end in death. The disease mimics the flu, and pus-filled skin lumps.
MpoX is clade I and Clade II. Clade II is endemic in West Africa and clade I in central Africa. A strain called Ib, part of the I genogroup has now evolved and seems to spread faster.
2023: The Congo, as well as s some of the neighboring countries have seen escalating out breaks.
As of 2024, more than 17,000 infections and over 500 deaths related to mpox have occurred in central and eastern Africa — most notably in Congo — according to an emergency declaration announced earlier this week by the Africa Centers for Disease Control.
