FDA says a food recall is: voluntary removal of a product from the market by a manufacturer or distributor. which may deviate from regulatory requirements set by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The only other food regulated by the FDA is everything else if it does not involve meat, poultry or processed eggs — those are overseen by USDA.

Sunday June 20, A leading food safety attorney recently said “you can bet your last dollar you’ll see some more of these illnesses” and called on Congress to probe Boar’s Head after deli meat manufactured at one of the company’s plants was linked to an ongoing multi state listeria outbreak.

The epidemic is responsible for 57 hospitalizations and nine deaths in a total of 18 states since the story broke on July 19, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

CDC Aug 28 Six new deaths were reported by the CDC today that are connected to this outbreak (the first in these states): New Mexico, South Carolina (2), Tennessee, and New York.

But there will probably be more illnesses — and possibly deaths as well, because the incubation period for listeria can take longer than two months to show symptoms; people who ate contaminated deli meat in July might still become ill later on, according to Bill Marler, a Seattle attorney specializing in food safety.

A CDC investigation identified deli-sliced meats, including Boar’s Head brand liverwurst, as the source of listeria that sickened people. Boar’s Head later broadened its recall to include all the products produced at their Jarratt, Virginia facility.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service released inspection reports this week that showed the presence of insects, filth, mold and mildew on at least four occasions inside the plant in 2011 before it was voluntarily closed due to an outbreak.

USA Today called Marler, who said: “This is the worst list of inspection reports I have ever seen.

Marler, who is representing the family of one victim and two others sickened in the outbreak claimed that Congress should be looking into how such a listeria problem could come about and why inspectors kept letting plant conditions go.

Why is food recalled?

This is not the only reason food can be recalled, Bacterial contamination of reputability a risk that could cause illness or in worst case death cases should eaten.

Also, if a foreign object is discovered in the product such as glass or plastic again this will lead to recall. This is one other reason why a recall may occur: if an allergen contained in the food is not listed on the product label.

Which food recalls should I avoid?

You put yourself at risk any time there is a food recall because, for the most part you still are going to eat some of it even if they tell you not too.

Many food products are repeat offenders and have a known link to illness.

Consumer Reports compiled a paper examining food recalls and outbreaks of foodborne diseases from 2017 to the present. They looked at data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as agencies like the FDA and USDA. The analysis looked at foods recalled for bacterial contamination.

A list of 10 foods — from the analysis in order from most serious to least — that have been linked to recalls due to severity, between 2017 and the beginning of 2022.

Please read the recall notice initially, when it comes to food recalls.

Do not eat the recalled food, because you can get very sick. According to Food safety, few of the food recalls are initiated due to actual contamination and most occur out of a sense for precaution, retain if those foods could be formattiln23 contaminated.
