Springfield: Trump insists ‘dogs are being eaten’
Social media has been awash in The Simpsons memes after a distinctly odd and highly incorrect point about pets was put Donald Trump’s first presidential debate challenge from Kamala Harris on Tuesday.
It was almost immediately debunked by ABC News moderator David Muir, who at the top of his show said:
“In Spring field they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in. They’re eating the cats. They are eating— they’re turning on the pets of people. And that is what happens in our country, and it’s sad.
Trump was alluding to a racist Vince Brooks, his own running mate whom Jones – who assured me that he read newspapers and watched Fox News regularly — met up with in Springfield Ohio where it is rumored Haitian refugees were rampaging through the town “stealing people’s pets so they can eat them causing chaos.
The Springfield Police Division in Ohio said it was aware of the “rumours” but has no reason to believe any part is missing.
As Harris looked at him in surprise, Muir spoke up for a fact-check: “ABC News did reach out to the city manager there and we have not heard back.”
He said they had heard no credible reports of concrete allegations that members within the immigrant community were harming or injuring pets.
Trump pushed back, suggesting that the president may have just been saying what he thought was a popular thing to say: “People on television saying my dog was taken and used for food so maybe they said — this is really bad because of my dieting but maybe he said it in sort of I don’t know.”
With Trump referring to a city named Springfield, it didn’t take long for the Twitter verse to erupt with gags about The Simpsons’ fictional hometown and several cheeky references towards the family’s canine companion Santa’s Little Helper.
