UFC 306 tonight is due to be a barn burner topped by an explosive bantam weight title clash between reigning champion Sean O’Malley and mercurial no.1 contender Merab Dvalishvili.
The bout, which is one of the most anticipated fights of the year, pits two fighters who specialize in the opposite type of MMA.
O’Malley, who has built up an exciting reputation as a flashy striker is coming off his most impressive performance to date in the promotion, a one-sided drubbing of Marlon Vera, the only person ever to have bested him under the UFC banner.
O’Malley is known for putting an absolute beating on his competition, often utilizing his sharpshooter sniper-type accuracy to navigate around on the feet.
Indeed, he has one of the best differential records in the bantamweight division and is one of the most feared strikers ever to compete in UFC.
His latest win came in a convincing victory over Vera where O’Malley even outs trucked his opponent that has only further established him as one of the most thrilling fighters to watch.
Across the cage, Merab Dvalishvili offers a diametrically opposed fight style as an unrelenting wrestler and cardio machine.
And Dvalishvili is currently in the midst of an amazing tear, as he has won 10 straight bouts inside the cage for the UFC.
Dvalishvili is called “The Machine” for good reason; he uses his wrestling to oppress his opposition, racking up a historical number of takedowns in the bantamweight ranks.
Add him dominating an opponent like former champion Petr Yan to the mix, and he landed 147 significant strikes and 11 takedowns in that fight.
It is his non-stop pressure and unbelievable gas tank which makes him a nightmare for anyone he squares off against.
You figure this will be a classic grappler vs striker matchup, as O’Malley’s elite striking meets Dvalishvili’s wrestling.
It is likely to be decided by Dvalishvili closure of distance to make the fight dirty and bring it to the ground, or if O’Malley keeps the bout where he wants ideal altitude and fines his striking differential.
UFC 306 will also include a featherweight co-main event in between Brian Ortega and Diego Lopes, making the card even more thrilling.
Fans are also treated to high-stakes action with multiple other matchups. Prelims begin at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the main card at 10 p.m. on ESPN.
